I needed Asian fonts to make keyboard layout diagrams for bopomofo, Korean and Japanese.

If you try to load a font like MS Mincho, or SimSun or one of the Korean fonts it doesn’t work, as the FAQs suggest.

BUT Sun-ExtA which is freely available is a straightforward ttf font file and it works fine. It even has the rare hiragana and katakana signs, as well as all Korean syllables. You may have to get metrics and work out for yourself where to place a character, but you CAN do it.

It would be nice if you could handle characters outside the Unicode base plane though.
